Garden Salad

July 20, 2015 By J 1 Comment

There was a time in my life when all I ever craved was a DQ Oreo and Skor Blizzard. That time (and craving) is long gone.

It is mid-summer and my garden is popping out fresh deliciousness every day. Today the kids helped me pick a few things for our salad – parsley, leaf lettuce, baby kale, sorrel, sweet basil, arugula, snow peas, tomatoes and rapini flowers. If only you could smell these photos… *swoon*

It looks so basic and simple – and it IS – but the flavours… wow. My 5 year old said she “could eat nine hundred more” (we’ll have to expand the garden next year!)

I find that when kids are involved in making food (picking, mixing, etc.), they seem to be more excited to eat it. Rapini flowers actually have a pretty bitter taste, but the kids love to go to the garden and snack on them!

It is the North American way to trust that any food that is on grocery store shelves, or served in restaurants (fast food or otherwise) is good, healthy, safe food. Sadly this is far from true, and the more people adopt your approach, the better !
